Defence Minister David McGuinty confirms fatalities and injuries; the RCMP is involved in the probe. High winds spread the blaze beyond the base fence; no evacuation order yet.

Why it matters

A serious incident at one of Canada's busiest military training bases triggered a major fire, with the defence minister confirming fatalities and injuries. The RCMP is involved in the investigation and the situation is still developing.

What happened

The incident occurred Saturday, Oct. 17, at Canadian Forces Base Wainwright in Alberta. RCMP officers were called just after 4 p.m.; early reports pointed to a fire at a training area. A windstorm with gusts up to 100 km/h swept Alberta that day, pushing the blaze across the base fence and into the surrounding rural area. Firefighters from multiple jurisdictions are responding; no evacuation order is in effect, and residents of the nearby town of Wainwright are helping the base treat the injured and fight the fire.

Official response

Defence Minister David McGuinty, speaking to reporters in Ottawa, confirmed deaths and injuries but gave no casualty figures or cause, calling it "an active and delicate investigation" and promising more information in the coming hours and days. Prime Minister Mark Carney said on social media that a "serious incident" had created a major fire and that Ottawa is working closely with Alberta and local authorities. Premier Danielle Smith described the fire as "significant and tragic." Opposition leader Pierre Poilievre said he had spoken with Carney and McGuinty to offer support, urging people to "pray for Wainwright," follow emergency instructions and keep roads clear for first responders.

CFB Wainwright, about 180 km southeast of Edmonton, is one of Canada's busiest training bases, home to the Canadian Manoeuvre Training Centre and the 3rd Canadian Division Training Centre, used mainly to prepare soldiers for combat operations.
