London Wandsworth town centre consultation closes November 6; council says plan does not go far enough

Transport for London's public consultation on walking, cycling and bus changes in Wandsworth town centre closes on Friday, November 6, covering Wandsworth High Street, East Hill and the gyratory system; the council says the plan does not go far enough.
Transport for London's (TfL) public consultation on changes to Wandsworth town centre closes on Friday, November 6. The proposals cover walking, cycling and bus travel along Wandsworth High Street, East Hill and the area's gyratory one-way system, and residents, businesses and commuters can comment before the deadline through TfL's Have Your Say platform.
What is proposed
Under the consultation documents, pedestrians would get new signal-controlled crossings, wider pavements at busy bus stops and continuous footways across side-street junctions; buses would get extended bus lanes and reconfigured stopping locations to cut delays caused by general traffic; cyclists would get protected cycle tracks and dedicated signal phases at junctions to reduce conflicts with turning motor vehicles.
Wandsworth town centre has long carried heavy traffic, with a gyratory system built in the mid-20th century and a high share of heavy goods vehicles in recent years, raising air-quality, collision and pedestrian-connectivity concerns. The proposals are the latest step in a multi-year effort by TfL and Wandsworth Council to reallocate street space toward sustainable travel.
Council: not far enough
Wandsworth Council welcomed the plan but said it does not go far enough, according to local outlet Putney.news on October 27. Once the consultation ends, TfL will publish a report and decide whether to go ahead with the plan, change it or drop it — so nothing in the scheme is final yet, construction has not started, and the timetable depends on the consultation outcome.
Note the distinction: this is the town-centre walking, cycling and bus consultation, a different matter from the Putney road-digging lane rental charges covered in this site's October 28 story.
