Montréal's Mercier Bridge: inbound lane closed indefinitely after crack found in steel beam

· N GLOBE

Quebec's Transport Ministry closed the left inbound lane of the Honoré-Mercier Bridge indefinitely after a crack was discovered in a steel beam. The precautionary closure caused 60-minute delays Wednesday morning and is expected to last at least through the weekend.

Why it matters

The nearly 90-year-old Honoré-Mercier Bridge is a major link between Montréal and the South Shore; closing an inbound lane hits rush-hour commuters directly.

What happened

Late Tuesday evening, Oct. 13, Quebec's Transport Ministry announced the indefinite closure of the left lane heading toward Montréal after a crack was found in a steel beam during maintenance work. Spokesperson Louis-André Bertrand called it a "preventative measure" to reduce the load on the structure, adding the bridge remains safe to drive on because of how weight is distributed. By 7 a.m. Wednesday, the closure was causing 60-minute delays for motorists.

What next

Officials say the lane will stay closed at least through the end of the week. Tolls on the Highway 30 bridge westbound are suspended from 5:30 to 9:30 a.m. to divert traffic. Drivers are advised to allow extra travel time.
