Prime Minister Mark Carney has announced that the Crown Prince of Abu Dhabi, Sheikh Khaled bin Mohamed bin Zayed Al Nahyan, will visit Ottawa from October 26 to 27, 2026, to expand the Canada–UAE partnership into defence, energy, critical minerals, space, quantum and AI.

Why it matters

Prime Minister Mark Carney announced on October 25, 2026, that the Crown Prince of Abu Dhabi, His Highness Sheikh Khaled bin Mohamed bin Zayed Al Nahyan, will visit Ottawa from October 26 to 27, 2026. The visit comes as Canada's relationship with the United Arab Emirates deepens quickly, with a Comprehensive Economic Partnership Agreement negotiated this year and a Foreign Investment Promotion and Protection Agreement in force since May.

What they will discuss

According to the Prime Minister's Office, the leaders will work to expand the partnership to new strategic areas, including defence and security, energy, critical minerals, infrastructure, international development, space and advanced communications technologies, and quantum and artificial intelligence.

The Prime Minister's Office said Canada and the UAE successfully negotiated the Comprehensive Economic Partnership Agreement in a record 47 days earlier this year, following the successful finalisation of the Canada-UAE Foreign Investment Promotion and Protection Agreement, which entered into force in May, providing greater predictability for Canadian and Emirati investors.
