Ottawa police kill two-year-old bear in Kanata's Bridlewood

· N GLOBE

Ottawa police killed a bear wandering in Kanata's Bridlewood neighbourhood on October 19; Ottawa ByLaw and the National Capital Commission had been trying to trap it since Friday.

Why it matters

How Ottawa responds to bears entering residential areas is a sensitive issue — after police shot a bear in a Kanata backyard in 2023, residents petitioned the city to overhaul its wildlife response policy. A similar incident has now happened again.

Full report

The Ottawa Police Service killed a two-year-old bear wandering in Kanata's Bridlewood neighbourhood on October 19. The bear is believed to be the same one spotted in several places across the city's west end in recent days.

According to CTV News Ottawa, Ottawa ByLaw and the National Capital Commission had been trying to trap the bear since Friday (October 16) before police ultimately killed it. The incident has revived discussion among residents about the city's wildlife response policy.

On the same day, another bear roaming the Centrepointe area was tranquilized by NCC wildlife staff and safely handed over to the Ministry of Natural Resources and Forestry — a very different outcome.
