A 16-year-old opened fire at Silver Rail Elementary School in Bend, Oregon, on Thursday, killing three children and a teacher. Two more were critically injured. An armed bystander pursued the gunman into the school and shot him dead.

Why it matters

A gunman forced his way into an elementary school, killing four and critically wounding two; an armed bystander's intervention prevented further bloodshed. The shooting has revived the debate over school safety and gun laws in the United States.

What happened

At about 12:59 p.m. local time, police first received a report of a man shooting into a car outside Silver Rail Elementary School in Bend, Oregon. A minute later, dozens of 911 calls reported a gunman inside the school. The 16-year-old suspect, armed with a long gun, shot through the locked doors to get in, killing three children aged 5, 8 and 11 and one teacher. A 7-year-old child and a 54-year-old teacher were taken to hospital with critical injuries. When officers arrived at 1:02 p.m., the suspect was already dead — shot by a community member legally carrying a concealed weapon who had pursued him into the building.

What next

Governor Tina Kotek praised the bystander for "heroically" intervening to stop further loss of life. Police have not released the names of the suspect or victims; the motive is under investigation. The FBI and the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives are assisting. The school district cancelled classes for Friday and a community vigil is planned.
