Canada negotiating economic cooperation deal with Angola in trade diversification push

The Globe and Mail reports Ottawa is negotiating an economic cooperation agreement with resource-rich Angola, one of the first African targets in its global trade diversification campaign; mining and critical minerals are a top priority for both sides.
Why it matters
Facing uncertainty over US tariff policy, Canada is accelerating trade diversification. A deal would put Angola ahead of most African countries that have not received the same attention from Ottawa, and Canadian mining companies could be direct beneficiaries.
Full report
Ottawa is negotiating an economic cooperation agreement with resource-rich Angola, one of the first African targets in the Carney government's global trade diversification campaign, The Globe and Mail reported on Oct. 13.
Prime Minister Mark Carney met Angolan President João Lourenço on the sidelines of the UN General Assembly last month, invited him to Canada and announced progress in their economic negotiations. According to his office, the leaders discussed an economic cooperation agreement and agreed to work toward its conclusion, with deeper collaboration in mining and critical minerals a top priority for both countries.
The agreement would be a memorandum-of-understanding-style broad framework paving the way for future deals, rather than a detailed blueprint, the report said.
