NAFDAC Raids Illegal Herbal Factory in Lagos' Agege, Arrests Manager

Nigeria's food and drug agency uncovered an illegal herbal medicine factory in Agege, Lagos, where three variants of Asheitu Adams Bitters carried registration number A7-1827L — which actually belongs to a cough syrup. The 39-year-old manager was arrested.
Why it matters
Fake and fraudulently registered herbal products circulate in Lagos markets, leaving buyers thinking they purchased regulated goods. This is NAFDAC's second enforcement wave in under a week, signaling a tightening crackdown.
What happened
NAFDAC announced on its official X account on Wednesday that it had uncovered and sealed an illegal herbal product manufacturing facility in Agege, Lagos State. The raid followed a report by a national daily on October 10 that herbal products were bearing falsified NAFDAC registration numbers.
After surveillance, investigators found three variants of Asheitu Adams Bitters printed with registration number A7-1827L. A check on NAFDAC's product administration portal (NAPAMS) showed the number actually belongs to Greentol Cough Syrup, confirming fraudulent use.
The company's managing director/chief executive was absent during the operation; the 39-year-old manager, Abdullazeez Saidu, was arrested for questioning. NAFDAC urged the public to report suspected illegal manufacturing on 0800-1-623322 or 0700-1-623322, or by email at [email protected].
Context
