Vancouverites vote today, Saturday October 17, in the municipal election, choosing a mayor, 10 city councillors, 7 Park Board commissioners and 9 school trustees, plus three Capital Plan borrowing questions and two public-safety plebiscite questions. All 85 voting places are open from 8 a.m. to 8 p.m.
Why it matters
Today is general voting day in Vancouver's municipal election. On Saturday, October 17, all 85 voting places across the city are open from 8 a.m. to 8 p.m., and voters may cast ballots at any of them. The ballot elects one mayor, 10 city councillors, 7 Park Board commissioners and 9 school trustees, and asks three Capital Plan borrowing questions and two plebiscite questions on public safety. Advance voting ended October 13, and mail ballots must reach the City by 8 p.m. tonight. Counting begins at 8 p.m., with unofficial results posted on election night.
Full report
Incumbent mayor Ken Sim (ABC Vancouver) is seeking re-election against former chief of staff Kareem Allam (Vancouver Liberals), sitting councillor Rebecca Bligh (Vote Vancouver), Pete Fry (Green), Colleen Hardwick (TEAM for a Livable Vancouver) and Muhammad Ahmad (Bright Future Vancouver). The civic vote is part of B.C.'s province-wide local elections; a separate provincial election follows one week later on October 24, and the back-to-back ballots have caused confusion among some voters.
To vote you must be 18 or older on election day, a Canadian citizen, have lived in B.C. for at least six months before registering, and live in Vancouver or own property in the city. Voters who did not register in advance can register at the voting place on election day with two pieces of ID.
