Washington Mayoral Frontrunner Vows to Create 'Rat Czar' Post

Democratic D.C. mayoral nominee Janeese Lewis George has pledged that, if she wins in November, she will create a dedicated "rat czar" position in 2027 to tackle the city's long-running rodent problem.
Why it matters
Democratic D.C. mayoral nominee Janeese Lewis George has pledged that if she wins November's general election, she will create a dedicated "rat czar" position in 2027 to take on Washington's long-standing rat problem, the Washington Examiner's evening news reported.
Who she is
Lewis George, the Ward 4 council member and a self-described democratic socialist, won June's Democratic primary with 53% of the vote against former councilmember Kenyan McDuffie's 37%. Incumbent Mayor Muriel Bowser is not seeking a fourth term, and in heavily Democratic D.C. the nominee is all but certain to win. The 38-year-old is a third-generation Washingtonian.
Her campaign has centered on affordable housing, public safety reform and resisting federal interference in D.C.'s autonomy. President Trump last month called her a "communist" and threatened to place Washington under federal control if she wins.
