Los Angeles County Beaches Under Beach Hazards Statement: Elevated Surf, High Tides Through Friday

· N GLOBE

The National Weather Service has a beach hazards statement in effect for Los Angeles County-area beaches until 11 p.m. Friday (Oct. 9): 3-to-6-foot surf and abnormally high morning and evening tides raise rip current and localized coastal flooding risks. Officials urge beachgoers to stay out of the water and off rock jetties.

Anyone heading to the beach today should take extra care.

The beach hazards statement from the National Weather Service's Los Angeles/Oxnard office is valid until 11 p.m.

The weather service warns of a moderate rip current risk and possible moderate beach erosion. The statement covers Catalina/Santa Barbara Islands, Malibu, Los Angeles County beaches and Ventura County beaches.

The NWS advises staying out of the water in hazardous conditions, or staying near occupied lifeguard towers; rock jetties can be deadly in such surf and should be avoided. The agency also noted the statement could be upgraded to a coastal flood advisory or high surf advisory and extended into the weekend.
