New Delhi shuts Connaught Place's Central Park for two days as police brace for flag march

· N GLOBE

The Cockroach Janta Party's "Lehra Do Tiranga" march at Connaught Place today, Oct. 16, drew no police permission: Section 163 BNSS is in force, Central Park is closed for two days, and 6,000+ police with 220 CAPF companies are deployed.

Why it matters

One flag triggers a full lockdown of the capital's core: Central Park shut for two days, 6,000+ personnel on the streets, and traders bracing for losses in the festive season — a snapshot of Delhi's tightening security posture.

Full report

On October 16, the "Lehra Do Tiranga" (Wave the Tricolour) march by the Cockroach Janta Party (CJP), founded by Abhijeet Dipke, was planned for 5 pm at Central Park in Connaught Place. The New Delhi Municipal Council has closed Central Park on October 16 and 17 for "administrative reasons".

Delhi Police denied permission for the event and imposed a prohibitory order under Section 163 of the Bharatiya Nagarik Suraksha Sanhita (BNSS) in Connaught Place and surrounding areas: more than 6,000 Delhi Police personnel and 220 companies of Central Armed Police Forces are deployed across Connaught Place, Rajiv Chowk, Central Park, Jantar Mantar, Metro stations and Palika Bazaar.

Police also offered an alternative: a select group of 11 people would be allowed to wave the national flag and sing the national anthem at a suitable venue, while urging the public to stay away from gathering areas, warning of legal action for violations.

The backdrop: early Tuesday morning, two CJP leaders, Saurav Das and Ashutosh Ranka, were arrested for entering Jantar Mantar with the national flag and remanded to five days of judicial custody. Dipke hit back: "Why does Delhi Police have a problem with waving the Tiranga?" Delhi Traffic Police has issued an advisory for traffic around Connaught Place from 3 pm on Oct. 16.
