Ukraine launches massive overnight drone wave on Russia; Moscow claims 1,015 intercepted, St. Petersburg oil terminal ablaze

Russia's Defence Ministry said air defences downed 1,015 Ukrainian drones between Saturday evening and Sunday morning; St. Petersburg's governor confirmed fires at the oil terminal, the Ruchyi depot and warehouses, with one person killed in the city.

Why it matters

This is the largest single-night drone interception figure Moscow has ever published in the war, striking at Russian energy and logistics infrastructure — about a week after Trump announced a halt to strikes on energy facilities, as Washington defends postponing new sanctions on Moscow.

What happened

Russia's Defence Ministry said air defences destroyed 1,015 Ukrainian drones between 8 p.m. Saturday and 8 a.m. Sunday Moscow time, across 15 regions plus annexed Crimea and the Black Sea (a Russian claim, not independently verified), with 41 more reported downed during daytime. St. Petersburg Governor Alexander Beglov confirmed fires at the Petersburg Oil Terminal, the Ruchyi oil depot and industrial warehouses in the Kolpino district; one person was killed and five injured in the city, and 12 apartment buildings and two private homes were damaged. Operations at Pulkovo Airport were restricted and mobile internet service was disrupted.

Other infrastructure hit

Russian e-commerce giant Ozon confirmed its St. Petersburg logistics hub was hit by a drone and caught fire; staff were evacuated and no one was hurt. Tech company VK said its data centre in the Leningrad region was attacked but services remained normal. The Leningrad region governor said two transformer substations in Yanino were knocked out, leaving about 20,000 people without electricity. Reuters tallied one person killed and 15 injured across the city and surrounding region.

What each side says

President Volodymyr Zelenskyy told NBC's "Meet the Press" on Sunday that U.S.-Ukraine intelligence sharing had resumed after being "blocked for some period of time"; he said Russia had struck Ukraine's energy sector 76 times and criticized President Trump's October 16 decision to waive new sanctions on Russia. Ukraine's Air Force said Russia retaliated with one Iskander-M ballistic missile and 180 strike drones, of which 152 were shot down or suppressed.
