Anthropic IPO filing warns TSMC disruption could hit AI chip supply

In its IPO registration statement filed with the US SEC on October 26, Anthropic warned that disruptions to TSMC could hurt its business, noting that most advanced chip manufacturing capacity is concentrated in Taiwan, primarily at TSMC.
Artificial intelligence company Anthropic has warned that disruptions to Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Company (TSMC) could adversely affect its business, highlighting the critical role of the Taiwanese chipmaker in the global supply chain powering advanced AI systems.
What the filing says
In its registration statement filed with the US Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) on October 26, Anthropic flagged the concentration of advanced semiconductor manufacturing in Taiwan as a significant risk. "The majority of the world's most advanced chip manufacturing capacity is concentrated in Taiwan, primarily at Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Company ('TSMC')," the company said in the filing.
The company highlighted potential disruptions including natural disasters, geopolitical tensions between Taiwan and China, and interruptions to essential infrastructure such as electricity and water supplies. "Any military conflict, tariffs and trade restrictions, economic coercion, blockade, natural disaster, or other incident affecting Taiwan could severely disrupt the global supply of advanced chips," Anthropic cautioned. The filing also notes that TSMC has at times been unable to meet full demand for manufacturing capacity, and that restrictions or delays on advanced chip supply out of Taiwan or TSMC would adversely affect its business, financial condition and results of operations.
Why the impact could last
Anthropic said the impact of a disruption to Taiwan's semiconductor manufacturing could extend well beyond the immediate interruption, given the time required to establish alternative manufacturing capacity. While efforts are under way to expand advanced chip manufacturing outside Taiwan, including in the United States, the company said these initiatives remain in early stages and may not produce adequate compute to materially reduce these concentration risks within the foreseeable future.
A risk disclosure, not a supply outage
This is a risk disclosure in an IPO filing, not a report that TSMC is currently disrupted; none of the coverage reports a current outage at TSMC. The S-1 is the same October 26 filing whose basic terms this site has already reported; this article focuses on its TSMC supply-risk angle. The number of shares and the price range have not been determined, and the registration statement has not yet become effective.
