New Delhi launches mega Yamuna cleanup at 70 ghats; CM and BJP chief lead teams

Thousands of Delhi residents joined a simultaneous mega cleanliness drive at 70 Yamuna ghats on Oct 18, led by Chief Minister Rekha Gupta and city BJP chief Harsh Malhotra, who attacked the previous AAP government's river record.

Why it matters

The Yamuna is Delhi's lifeline and a major tributary of the Ganga, yet decades of sewage and industrial discharge have left long stretches badly polluted, with successive cleanup plans failing. The scale of Sunday's action was unprecedented: 70 ghats, thousands of volunteers in one morning — paired with Saturday's rollout of 500+ sanitation vehicles, the BJP government's first city-wide environmental mobilization since winning the Delhi assembly elections.

Full report

On Saturday the Chief Minister's Office posted an appeal on X urging residents to reach their nearest Yamuna ghat by 7:30 am on Oct 18: "The cleanliness of Mother Yamuna is our shared responsibility." Chief Minister Rekha Gupta led volunteers at ITO Hathi Ghat-1, while Delhi BJP president Harsh Malhotra led the Gandhi Nagar Ghat team; other MPs fanned out to Kalindi Kunj and Ram Ghat, according to a Delhi BJP statement.

A day earlier, Gupta and Malhotra had flagged off more than 500 vehicles for door-to-door waste collection and 250 battery-operated litter-picker machines for Municipal Corporation of Delhi (MCD) wards at an event in Sarita Vihar — including 428 auto-tippers, 128 e-rickshaws, 27 refuse compactors and 100 compactor bins.

Malhotra used the occasion to attack the previous AAP government, saying it never had a real plan to clean the river and questioning the use of nearly Rs 2,900 crore in central funds given for the cleanup. The Gupta administration says it has drawn up a plan to clean a 33-km stretch of the river.
