Jobs Minister Patty Hajdu announced a $4,985,998 FedNor investment in five economic development projects supporting SMEs in Thunder Bay and across Northern Ontario.

Why it matters

The Honourable Patty Hajdu, Minister of Jobs and Families and Minister responsible for FedNor, announced on Oct. 14 in Thunder Bay a total FedNor investment of $4,985,998 in five economic development projects that directly support small and medium-sized enterprises in Thunder Bay and across Northern Ontario. The funding aims to help businesses navigate tumultuous international trade markets and rapidly changing technologies.

Northern Ontario businesses will benefit from financial assistance opportunities, business counselling, access to information and resources, industry network development, and improved labour force matching and retention. FedNor funds will also support the federal commitment to advancing economic reconciliation by awarding federal contracts to Indigenous-owned businesses.

Background

The Government of Canada says the country's economy has long led in fostering SME success, which it calls the foundation of national strength. Hajdu said Northern Ontario's economy grows when more people have the chance to participate, helping entrepreneurs build good jobs close to home.

Representatives of funded organizations — including Rosalind Lockyer, founder of the PARO Centre for Women's Enterprise, and Jason Rasevych, president of the Anishnawbe Business Professional Association — said the funding will help them continue supporting women entrepreneurs, Indigenous businesses and Francophone communities.
