Lagos: 33,000-litre ethanol tanker overturns on Second Rainbow Bridge, no casualties

A tanker carrying 33,000 litres of highly flammable ethanol overturned on the Second Rainbow Bridge in Lagos on Wednesday morning; no deaths or injuries were recorded.
Why it matters
On Wednesday morning (Oct. 14), around 11 a.m., a truck carrying 33,000 litres of highly flammable ethanol fell off the Second Rainbow Bridge in the Amuwo Odofin Local Government Area of Lagos State. The vehicle lost stability while negotiating a turn on the bridge; its turntable detached and landed on the roundabout, blocking the entire stretch. No deaths or injuries were recorded.
The Permanent Secretary of the Lagos State Emergency Management Agency (LASEMA), Dr Olufemi Oke-Osanyintolu, confirmed the incident, saying preliminary investigations pointed to speeding as the cause. Recognising the serious risk of fire and explosion from the volatile cargo, responders immediately cordoned off the area with crowd and traffic control measures, while the Lagos State Fire and Rescue Service and the Federal Fire Service applied chemical foam to the tanker and surroundings to suppress fumes and prevent a secondary incident.
LASEMA's heavy-duty recovery equipment, 'Super Metro', lifted the fallen vehicle, which was then towed to the LASTMA yard; the road has been reopened. Oke-Osanyintolu commended the swift multi-agency response and urged motorists to observe speed limits and road safety rules, especially when transporting heavy and hazardous materials.
Second incident the same day
LASEMA also reported that its Tiger Response Team restored traffic at Oke Koto, Agege, where a Dangote cement truck had climbed a road divider and become stuck due to reckless driving; responders worked with LASTMA to remove the vehicle.
