Hero dogs hit the red carpet: ASPCA's annual Humane Awards honor animal heroes in NYC — even a patrol horse

The ASPCA hosted its 2026 Humane Awards luncheon in New York on Oct. 21: miniature therapy horses, heroic rescue dogs and a retired police horse patrolling Manhattan shared the stage; an 8-year-old animal lover received a special tribute; at the Halloween dog parade, 3-month-old puppy Cloud was held by John Legend — and adopted the same day.
Why it matters
Once a year, the 160-year-old ASPCA puts animal heroes on stage: they have saved lives, cracked cases and comforted the sick. A feel-good story — and a reminder to adopt, not shop.

The American Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (ASPCA) held its annual Humane Awards luncheon in New York on Oct. 21, honoring extraordinary animals and animal lovers of the past year.
The honorees made a star-studded lineup: miniature therapy horses, a rescued police horse patrolling Manhattan, a former shelter dog searching for survivors in disaster zones — and an eight-year-old whose love of animals inspired a foundation dedicated to helping animals in need.
ASPCA president and CEO Matt Bershadker said in his remarks: helping the animal in front of us is essential, but to change the future for animals, we must change the conditions that put them at risk in the first place.
The same weekend saw the 36th Annual Tompkins Square Halloween Dog Parade. At the kickoff, 3-month-old puppy Cloud was held by singer John Legend, wearing an orange 'adopt me' badge — and later that day, a parade spectator adopted him from the shelter.
