Volkswagen and NXP ally: S32K5 chips to anchor future software-defined vehicles

Volkswagen Group and NXP Semiconductors announced a strategic partnership on October 26, 2026: NXP's S32K5 microcontrollers will serve as a common building block for Volkswagen's future zonal software-defined vehicle architecture, developed by RV Tech, the Volkswagen-Rivian joint venture, with the first vehicle on the new architecture planned for 2027. Financial terms were not disclosed.
Volkswagen Group and NXP Semiconductors announced on October 26, 2026, in Wolfsburg, Germany, that they have agreed on a strategic partnership: NXP has been selected as a strategic technology partner, and its S32K5 family of microcontrollers (MCUs) will serve as a common building block for the Group's future zonal software-defined vehicle (SDV) architecture, across brands and vehicle segments. The announcement came ahead of the International Suppliers Fair (IZB) in Wolfsburg.
Zonal architecture replaces scattered controllers
Modern vehicles must support a growing number of digital functions, and managing each through separate electronic control units (ECUs) increases development and parts complexity and limits scalability. Zonal architecture uses powerful microcontrollers to consolidate multiple vehicle functions into fewer ECUs. The S32K5 MCUs are the core processors of the vehicle's zonal controllers: they connect sensors and actuators, collect and process data from specific areas of the vehicle, and manage lighting, body, comfort, chassis and safety systems, providing the foundation for the central computing platform to run AI functions such as automated driving and advanced infotainment.
First vehicle planned for 2027
The future zonal SDV architecture is being developed by Rivian and Volkswagen Group Technologies, LLC (RV Tech), the joint venture between Volkswagen Group and Rivian, and is intended for use across both companies' vehicles while enabling brand-specific features and experiences. The first vehicle featuring the new architecture is planned for 2027. NXP says the S32K5 is built for safe real-time computing and fast, secure over-the-air (OTA) updates, so vehicles can keep improving throughout their lifecycle.
Part of Volkswagen's semiconductor strategy
Volkswagen says the partnership is part of its broader semiconductor strategy: through direct, long-term partnerships with leading semiconductor companies, it combines automotive expertise with cutting-edge chip technology to strengthen supply resilience and jointly shape key technologies for future vehicle generations, in support of its Group Target Picture 2030. Karsten Schnake, the Group executive responsible for procurement, said semiconductors are strategic technology for the auto industry and that the Group is taking a more active role in the semiconductor value chain: defining its technology needs early, leveraging its scale across brands and creating greater long-term planning certainty for both sides. The announcement did not disclose financial terms.
NXP, listed on NASDAQ as NXPI, operates in more than 30 countries and posted revenue of $12.27 billion in 2025.
