BrainChip launches AKD1500 Raspberry Pi 5 kit for always-on edge AI without the cloud

BrainChip said on October 29 it has launched an AKD1500 Raspberry Pi 5 development kit, bringing its event-based neuromorphic AI chip to the single-board computer many developers already use.

Neuromorphic AI chip company BrainChip announced on October 29 the AKD1500 Raspberry Pi 5 Development Kit. The kit pairs a Raspberry Pi 5 with the company's AKD1500 M.2 board, giving developers an off-the-shelf way to build low-power, always-on edge AI applications — and a path to production on the same AKD1500 chip, without switching silicon.

What the kit does

AKD1500 uses an event-based architecture: it processes only meaningful changes from sensors rather than every frame or sample, which suits devices that must listen, watch or measure continuously, such as sensors, monitors, wearables and industrial equipment. All processing happens on the device, avoiding the latency, bandwidth cost and privacy exposure of sending data to the cloud.

The chip also supports on-chip learning, so a developer can teach an application a new keyword, gesture or object in the field without retraining in the cloud. BrainChip said kit support will include Docker images that can be preloaded to simplify benchmarking and demos, and developers who already have a Raspberry Pi 5 with an M.2 HAT can add the production AKD1500 M.2 card and use the same software. Its MetaTF software tools and models are available free through the BrainChip Developer Hub.

The edge-computing bet

BrainChip said the kit, alongside its earlier PCIe card and M.2 board, completes an accessible lineup built on one chip, from prototyping through production. It cited a MarketsandMarkets projection that the global edge computing market will grow from $111.34 billion in 2026 to $317.39 billion by 2031 — a research firm's forecast, not booked sales.

The announcement did not disclose the kit's price, saying only that it is available now through the BrainChip Shop. Chief product officer Steve Brightfield said Raspberry Pi is where many edge AI products begin, and the kit gives teams a fast, low-cost way to validate applications on streaming data.
