Canada, Atlantic Provinces Renew Atlantic Fisheries Fund With Over $300M Over Five Years

Fisheries Minister Joanne Thompson announced in Moncton, N.B. on Oct. 15 that the Atlantic Fisheries Fund is renewed for five years, with over $300M in joint federal-provincial investment to help Atlantic seafood reach new markets.
Why it matters
Fisheries are the economic lifeline of Atlantic Canada's coastal communities. On Oct. 15, Fisheries Minister Joanne Thompson announced in Moncton, New Brunswick, that the Atlantic Fisheries Fund (AFF) is renewed for five more years, with over $300 million in strategic investments to help Atlantic seafood reach new markets and build resilience against global trade disruptions.
How the fund works
Ottawa will cover 60% of the funding and the four Atlantic provinces — Nova Scotia, New Brunswick, Prince Edward Island, and Newfoundland and Labrador — 40%. The renewed fund has four pillars: Market Diversification (new), Innovation, Infrastructure, and Science Partnerships. The new market-diversification pillar supports export advertising, market analysis and industry branding beyond traditional markets. Applications open today.
The four provincial fisheries ministers — Kent Smith (N.S.), Pat Finnigan (N.B.), Ernie Hudson (P.E.I.) and Loyola O'Driscoll (N.L.) — joined the announcement. Thompson said fishing has sustained Atlantic communities for generations, and renewing the fund with a new market-opening pillar means “when Atlantic seafood sells to more of the world, we build Canada strong.”
