IKEA Canada opened its first compact-format store today at White Oaks Mall in London, Ontario — a 43,000-sq-ft concept built for quick visits and everyday essentials. Mayor Josh Morgan attended the ribbon cutting.

Why it matters

This is IKEA Canada's first compact-format store, a sign that big-box retailers are moving toward smaller, community-anchored formats with shorter shopping trips serving everyday home needs — so southwest London residents no longer have to drive to the GTA's full-size stores.

Full report

IKEA Canada held the grand opening of its new store at White Oaks Mall in London, Ontario today (Oct. 16), a 43,000-square-foot space. Customers began lining up at 7:00 a.m.; after an opening ceremony with a land acknowledgement and ribbon cutting, the first shoppers entered at 10:00 a.m.

The store is built around the concept of quick visits and everyday essentials, combining home inspiration, household must-haves and services. Attending the opening were IKEA Canada CEO and Chief Sustainability Officer Selwyn Crittendon, London Mayor Josh Morgan, Ward 12 Councillor Elizabeth Peloza, MPP Teresa Armstrong and MP Kurt Holman.

Crittendon said the compact format brings IKEA closer to more Canadians with everyday convenience and a quicker shopping experience — the first store of its kind in the country.
