Singapore Rail Academy to roll out unified training curriculum with LTA and operators from November

· N GLOBE

Transport Minister Jeffrey Siow said on October 24 that the Singapore Rail Academy will introduce a consolidated training curriculum from November, developed with the Land Transport Authority and both operators, SBS Transit and SMRT Trains, and expand training beyond engineers to technicians and operations staff.

Why it matters

Rail reliability depends on front-line staff making sound decisions and carrying out works safely. Singapore has only two rail operators, yet each has run its own training; a single curriculum means one standard, with skills transferable across either operator, helping close staffing and skills gaps.

Full report

Transport Minister Jeffrey Siow announced the changes on October 24 at the Land Transport Authority's Singapore BusTech and RailTech Grand Challenge at ITE College West: standardised programmes, expanded eligibility, and new industry certification pathways. From November, the academy will run a consolidated curriculum developed with the LTA, SBS Transit and SMRT Trains, and partner ITE, Nanyang Polytechnic, Republic Polytechnic, Singapore Polytechnic and SIT.

The academy, launched in 2017, currently runs more than 20 training sessions a year for about 500 newly joined rail engineers. Under the new arrangement, training will no longer focus only on engineers: technicians and operations staff, who play an equally vital role in keeping trains running, will be included. Siow described the programme as standardised and true to the ground, with skills transferable across either operator. Singapore has six MRT lines and two LRT lines, run by the two operators.
