Amazon launches TorchNeuron to run PyTorch code on its Trainium AI chips with one config change

· N GLOBE

Amazon's Annapurna Labs is releasing TorchNeuron as free, open-source software so developers can run PyTorch workloads on Trainium chips, taking aim at Nvidia's CUDA ecosystem.

Why it matters

Amazon announced on October 19 that it is introducing TorchNeuron, a tool that lets developers run code written in PyTorch on Amazon's Trainium AI chips with a single configuration change and no rewriting. Nvidia has spent more than a decade building its CUDA software ecosystem to lock in AI developers, and Amazon is now targeting that moat directly.

Full report

According to Reuters reporter Stephen Nellis in San Francisco, the tool was developed by Amazon's Annapurna Labs chip unit. Amazon plans to announce it at a developer conference in Silicon Valley on Monday and will release it publicly as a free and open-source offering. PyTorch, stewarded by Meta, is the open-source framework most AI developers use.

Colin Brace, vice president of software for Annapurna Labs, told Reuters that more than 30 early customers are already using the software, spanning robotics, world models and voice AI. He said switching to Amazon's chips can result in steep cost savings — that is Amazon's claim, and actual savings vary by workload.

Other cloud players such as Google, which also has its own custom AI chips, are similarly improving their PyTorch tooling to lure developers away from Nvidia. The chip war is spreading from hardware specs to developer experience.
