Hong Kong Customs said on October 26 that it detected a drug trafficking case involving a passenger at Hong Kong International Airport, seizing about 3 kilograms of suspected cannabis buds with an estimated market value of about $600,000. One man was arrested, and the investigation is ongoing.

What else was in the baggage

Customs said a 56-year-old mainland male passenger arrived in Hong Kong from Bangkok, Thailand, on the day. During customs clearance, officers found about 3 kilograms of suspected cannabis buds, one product containing a suspected Part I poison, and seven sticks of duty-not-paid cigarettes inside his carry-on baggage. The man was subsequently arrested.

The penalties involved

Under the Dangerous Drugs Ordinance, trafficking in a dangerous drug is a serious offence, punishable on conviction by a fine of up to $5 million and life imprisonment, Customs said. Possessing a Part I poison other than in accordance with the Pharmacy and Poisons Ordinance carries a maximum fine of $100,000 and two years' imprisonment. Customs said it will continue to step up enforcement against drug trafficking through intelligence analysis, and reminded the public not to take part in drug trafficking for monetary return or to carry unknown items for other people across the border.
